Earlier this summer, David and I took an impromptu road trip to the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina. We lived in Charleston for two years after college, but this was our first time back together since the birth of our daughter. Since it was our first time away from Madelyn, it was part runaway adventure and part test run before our August Paris trip.
And when I say runaway, I truly mean it! I woke up on Thursday morning missing the city, brought up the idea of how wonderful a weekend would trip would be, and not three hours later, Grandma was on board for some special time with Maddie, the sweetest Inn on the Battery was booked, and we were planning road snacks for the drive there!
This post is more of a Charleston City Tour and less of a trip report, but being the foodie I am, I couldn’t help but share a few of our favorites. I’m gluten intolerant and always on the hunt for amazing local cafes and restaurants serving mouth-watering food that just happens to be gluten-free. Charleston is truly a haven for gluten-free options. Here are some of our favorites:
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit: with two locations downtown, you’re never far from a Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. Their gluten-free biscuits are life-changing. Buttery, flaky, but never dry, they’re the perfect biscuit. I highly recommend the BLT with lemon aioli! Best of all, Callie’s can do any of their sandwiches or accompaniments with the gluten-free biscuit base.
Grace and Grit: Anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with grits, and truly, no one does it better than Grace and Grit. Take a short drive over the mesmerizing Ravenell bridge to Mount Pleasant, and I promise these will be the best grits of your life! The sit-down dinner is amazing, but I also love their casual lunch, Grit Counter, for a DIY bowl.
Harken Cafe: This is the coziest French Country rustic coffee shop. Their lattes are my favorite in the city, and they serve a plethora of gluten-free and vegan pastry options. You truly don’t want to miss this beautiful spot in the heart of the French Quarter.
Caviar and Bananas: Not only do they label everything for gluten-free and dairy-free items, but they also have so many options! You can custom make a fresh salad or pick up a picnic-style meal. Trust me, get the roasted pecan chicken salad. It’s phenomenal!
